BURNING HOURS

DEMI - 60 HOURS

MAGNUM - 50 HOURS

IMPERIAL - 70 HOURS

DOUBLE MAGNUM – 110 HOURS

TED SPARKS SCENTED CANDLES

The above-mentioned burning times are averages. Burning times can be affected by various conditions. Read the tips below for optimal burning of your candle.

  • Trim the wick. every. single. time. to 0.6 centimeters above the wax before each use.
  • Let the wax melt all the way across. Once your candle is lit, DON’T blow it out until the top layer of wax has melted all the way across. It creates or sets a “memory” in the wax. This wax memory will be the foundation for how the rest of the candle will burn. If the candle is not burned properly the first time, it will start to “tunnel.” This first burn might take several hours, so don’t set out to burn the candle at all unless you’ve got time to do so.
  • Did you know…… that the full melt pool* (*the melted wax reaches the edge of the container) ensures that the candle releases its scent into the room? So make sure that every time you burn your candle a full melt pool is created to enjoy your scented candle.
  • A “mushroom” effect on the wick can cause the wick to become unstable so do not burn the candle for longer than 4-5 hours at a time.
  • Make sure that you do not place the candle in a draught, this may cause the candle to burn unevenly or start to smoke.
  • Safely dip your wicks to extinguish the flame. After you extinguish the candle, pop up the wick, pulling it out of the wax so it’s ready to light next time.
  • STOP BURNING the candle when only 1 centimeter of wax remains in the bottom of the glass. Heat against the bottom of the glass can cause it to crack.

TUNNELING

What is tunnelling?

Candle tunnelling happens when a candle burns down its centre, leaving hard wax around the outside. This wasted wax means your candle won’t achieve its maximum burn-time, a real waste if you love your scented candles as much as us.

As the flame burrows further down the middle, the wick will become more and more difficult to light and eventually be drowned by melting wax.

Candle tunnelling can happen to any candle regardless of the quality or price. Thankfully, there are a number of things you can do to help your scented candles burn evenly and efficiently, leaving as little residual wax as possible.

The best ways to avoid and fix candle tunnelling

You’ve invested in your favourite candle and you want to get the best burn every time.

It's all in the first burn...

The first time you light and burn your new candle really sets the stage for how well the candle will perform throughout its life.

Our biggest recommendation for the first burn, is to make sure that the pool of melted wax reaches the edges of your candle before you snuff the flame. We generally aim for the wax pool to be about 1cm deep at the edges before we put it out.

How long this takes depends on the diameter of the candle – if you’ve only got an hour to enjoy your new fragranced candle pick one that isn’t too wide. However, if you’ve got half a day to relax in the ambience of your new scent, a giant three or four wick candle will be a great choice.

Generally we always advocate that you should trim the wick before you burn a candle.  However, if your new candle is very wide you may want to leave the wick a little longer than usual. This will create a bigger, hotter flame that has more chance of melting the wax all the way to the edge. Just make sure that you keep a closer eye on the flame, snuffing it out if any issues arise.

TED SPARKS DIFFUSERS

What are reed diffusers and how do they work?

Reed diffusers are very simple to use; reeds are inserted into a glass bottle or glass jar of scented diffuser liquid, the reeds soak up the scent and emit a pleasant aroma around your home - easy!

Unlike candles, reed diffusers are flame free and do not require any heat. They disperse scent into the air naturally.

How to use your Reed Diffuser

Take off the screw cap and remove the plastic stopper. Replace the screw cap. Arrange the reed sticks in the glass bottle. Within a few hours the fragrance will be delicately diffused troughout the room. For less intense fragrance, use fewer sticks.

The flow of fragrance that eminates from a reed diffuser works much in the same manner as a bouquet of flowers might, since the scent is strongest when you pass by, but the scent is not necessarily capable of carrying throughout the whole room. So reed diffusers work best when the reeds are wet and are placed in high traffic areas. Outside a powder room, closet or basement are perfect spots for placement of reed diffusers. Other ideal spots might be near the source of an airflow, such as a vent or a window or just inside the room near the door so you pick up the scent as you enter the room. This helps the fragrance disperse throughout the desired area.

How long do reed diffusers last?

There are many factors that contribute to how long the diffusers last. Air conditioning, heating, closed doors, open doors, dehumidifiers, etc. However, we have found that our diffusers should last for approximately 3-4 months, but ultimately this will depend on the temperature of your home.

Can I top up my diffuser with a different scent and use the same reeds?

Once reeds have been used for a certain scent, you cannot use them for another scent. The scent that is already absorbed into your reeds will mix with the new scent and could produce undesirable scent combinations, so we don’t recommend doing so.

I have topped up my diffuser, do I need new reeds?

If you have topped up your diffuser with a refill and the reeds are completely saturated, or if they are no longer diffusing/giving off scent, they may have become clogged with dust. Best thing to do is to replace them with new reeds to get the scent rolling again. We suggest doing this after your first refill has finished, time wise that should be about 6 months of use from one set of reeds.

My reed diffuser doesn’t smell as strongly as it used to even though there’s still plenty in the bottle. What can I do?

You could try flipping the reeds, this simple re-positioning can help to give the diffusion process a little boost. However, don’t flip them too often as the more often you flip your reeds the faster the liquid will disperse. You could also give the bottle a very gentle “swirl” or two, this can also help to blend the ingredients of the liquid and strengthen the scent.
